This time Al B and DB take on the final stretch of the Captain Beefheart story, ranking Doc at the Radar Station and Ice Cream for Crow — the two extraordinary albums that bookend the Captain's final musical period.

Doc at the Radar Station is Beefheart sounding absolutely furious and completely alive: abrasive, weird, powerful and somehow still full of brilliant tunes. Ice Cream for Crow, recorded two years later with an almost entirely new Magic Band, takes things somewhere stranger and more spacious — a final burst of invention before Don Van Vliet sailed off into the desert and left music behind for painting.

So which album wins? Which songs have aged like fine wine, which sound like they were recorded on another planet, and where does the Captain's final period sit in the B.E.E.F.O.U.T. rankings?

This week, Al B, DB and friend of facts Dannyno descend into Dave Simpson's excellent book The Fallen. What starts as a simple look at former Fall members quickly mutates into a labyrinth of ex-members, pre-Fall bands, post-Fall bands, forgotten projects, bizarre career turns and unlikely reunions.

Along the way we bump into Karen Leatham, Eric the Ferret and the manager of The Chemical Brothers, plus dozens more familiar—and not so familiar—characters. Armed with Simpson's research, fading memories and misplaced confidence, we attempt to map one of the most bewildering family trees in rock history.

We confidently announced this would be a short episode... so naturally, two hours later, we're only halfway through.

Expect stories from the book, side roads, forgotten bands, dubious detective work, no investigative instinct whatsoever, plenty of hot takes, and the usual mixture of facts, speculation and affectionate nonsense.
